1930 Model A, "A-Toon"

Bob 'Rutter' Rutlidge, co-founder of Rutter's Rod Shop, has built several of his own vehicles over the years. One of his biggest achievements was this high-end 1930 Model A! The 'A-Toon' debuted at the Detroit Autorama in 2018 where it took several awards. He describes here the origins of his design and build.

“I grew up in a time when Big Daddy Roth and Rat Fink were popular, so I had lots of models and Hot Wheels designed during that era. As a kid I spent hours and hours imagining myself driving one of those cars. As an adult I just had to build my own, so I built this ‘30 Ford Model A to look like the cartoon car of which I often dreamed. I stretched the stock frame 7” and channeled the body 7” at the cowl with no channeling at the rear. I combined elements from two of the largest auto giants in the world when I added a ‘34 Chevy grill and a ‘34 Chevy dash to my Ford. I mounted 22” wheels in the back and 17” wheels in the front, all of which help give it the radical stance I wanted. I powered it with a big block, blower, and Zoomies which add to its untamed wild look. I dressed it in the striking color combination of Gold and Red and named my creation 'A-Toon'.”
